John Foster Dulles High School[edit]

Dulles High School is a school in Fort Bend ISD which is southwest of Houston. Located in Sugar Land, Texas, Dulles won a state championship in 1987 under the coaching of Judy Matney and placed second at nationals that year. They placed in the top 10 at least ten times (1987, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2015-2022), and qualified for the state competition every year between 1987 and 1996, as well as in 2002, 2003, and 2004.

They did not return to the state competition again until 2015, when they placed 10th at the large state competition with a team of 7 juniors. In 2016, 4 of those juniors returned as they continued their rise by winning region VII and finishing 5th at the large school state competition with the highest score in Fort Bend ISD history and in Region VII history (started 2002).

In 2017, a team made up of six scholastics and three varsities placed second at the Region VII meet behind James E. Taylor, and were also second in the state in the large school category coming out of regionals. The team would then go on to win the large school state championship by over 900 points, scoring 49,717, once again breaking the Fort Bend ISD and Region VII record. Arman Nazerian, an alternate for the team, qualified for individual nationals and claimed a 3rd place award in music.

In 2018, two returners, four other seniors, and three juniors placed first at the Region VII meet, winning by over 2,500 points over James E. Taylor and Seven Lakes, despite their 2nd varsity missing out due to eligibility. At state, Dulles increased over 2,000 points but lost out to Lubbock in 91.8 points. Dulles would appeal the results of the scores based on essay grading and subjective scoring differences at the medium and large school meets, but the appeal was denied.

In 2019, two returners, five other seniors, and two juniors placed first at the Region VII meet, winning by nearly 6,000 points, claiming 8 of the top 9 overall spots. At state, the team would go on to have two honors and two scholastics score over 9,000, winning state by over 2,500 points, and breaking the Texas State record for highest-scoring team with a score of 53,202.2. They are the first Texas team to score over 53,000. They would place the 1st and 3rd overall scholastics, and the 1st and 2nd overall varsities.

In 2020, two returnees, three other seniors, and four juniors placed first at the Region VII meet, placing 7 of the top 9 overall spots. At state, the team would go on to have two honors, three scholastics, and one varsity place in the top 5 overall, including the top 3 scholastics. The team would place top overall in the Large School category by almost 2,000 points, but would lose to Medium representative Highland Park for the ability to represent the state.

In 2021, three returnees, four other seniors, and two juniors placed first at the Region VII meet, placing 6 of the top 9 overall spots and winning by over 6,000 points. At state, the team would have three honors and two scholastics place overall, including the top three honors overall. The team would place top overall in the Large School Category by about 2,500 points, but would lose to both Highland Park and Friendswood from the Medium division. This all occurred while the team never met physically in person except for meets. All seven seniors would go on to compete at individual nationals and would receive 6 overall top-three finishes, including first overall (Kathryn Phung), third honors (Ashith Regi), all three scholastics (Abigail Diltz, Anthony Pasala, Jeffrey Jiang) and second place varsity (Leah Melendez).

In 2022, one returner, two other seniors, and six juniors placed first at the Region VII meet, placing 6 of the top 9 overall spots and winning by over 4,000 points. At state, the team would go on to increase by over 3,000 points, place all 3 honors, scholastics, and 2 varsities in the top five, and win large school state by almost 4,000 points and defeat Highland Park for the right to represent Texas at nationals for the third time in their history. Nationals was online after originally slated to be in Pittsburgh, and Dulles would go on to place 2nd in the nation to Granada Hills Charter.

In 2023, five seniors returned and were joined by two seniors and two juniors to place first in the Region VII meet, taking the top 3 spots in both honors and scholastics, as well as 1st place overall varsity. At the state competition, the team took home first in large school and first overall, with Jasmine Chou and Nora Gabriel claiming first place overall in their respective categories, and Anant Asthana (2nd honors), Vienna Cheng (2nd varsity), Ashley Dao (4th scholastic), and Audrey Hanan (5th scholastic) all placing in the top 5 of their respective categories.

In 2024, two seniors (Audrey Hanan and Anant Asthana) returned and were joined by three seniors (Jason Wu, Koushik Chaliki, and Ella Sheridan), three juniors (Alex He, Justin Jiang, Sreela Gutha) and one sophomore (Sriram Susarla) to take first place in the Region VII Meet. The team took home 1st and 2nd in honors and the top three spots in the scholastic and varsity categories. At the state meet, Dulles took home first place in a close contest and advanced to nationals for the third year in a row. Audrey Hanan took 1st in scholastics, with Koushik Chaliki and Alex He 2nd and 3rd in the same category. Anant Asthana took home 2nd in the honors category, and Sreela Gutha finished 5th in the varsity category.

Andrew Hartman was named Texas Large School Coach of the Year in 2019. Kelsey Halfen was named Texas Large School Coach of the Year in 2022.
