After 1993, Simi Valley High School was engaged in a rivalry with nearby Moorpark High School. Competition between Simi Valley and Moorpark for the Ventura County regional title led to a series of record-breaking scores, culminating in Moorpark producing a national championship team in 1999.

In 2000, Simi Valley very nearly followed suit. Coaches Ken and Sally Hibbitts as well as 4th-year decathlete Randy Xu led the team to score 50,195 points, the highest regional score in the nation. Moorpark, however, trailed Simi Valley by only 667 points, with a score of 49,528. At the 2000 California state finals, Simi Valley triumphed over Moorpark to earn its first trip to nationals. Simi Valley scored 50,032 points to Moorpark's 50,011. The winning margin of 21 points is possibly the closest finish in the history of the California Academic Decathlon. At this competition, Randy Xu scored 8,965 points, the highest score in Division I and the 2nd highest individual total achieved at the California state finals that year. The 2000 National championship saw Simi Valley achieve 52,010 points, which bested Moorpark's national winning score from the past year. James E. Taylor High School of Texas, however, beat Simi Valley by 460 points to capture the national title. Simi Valley produced three outstanding individual scores at the 2000 Nationals: Steve Mihalovits was the top Varsity in the nation with 8,753 points, Cary Opel was the 2nd Honor in the nation with 9,089 points, and David Bartlett was the 3rd Varsity in the nation with 8,293 points. Steve Mihalovits' total was one of the highest varsity scores in history.

Simi Valley High School is also notable for its 2003-2004 Academic Decathlon team. Coach Debbie Mjoen and the team earned the school another Ventura County championship in 2004. Simi Valley's score of 47,560 points was the 4th highest total in California going into the state finals. At state, Simi Valley placed fifth with 47,559 points and Scholastic Stephen Hampton scored 8,281.7, the 3rd highest scholastic score in California.
