Oakwood High School, located in Montgomery County, Ohio, founded their Academic Decathlon program in 2004. After gradually developing over the late 2000s', in 2011 Oakwood came from behind to win its first overall state title. After a lackluster 15th place finish (4th in DIII) at Nationals in 2011, the 2011-12 team committed themselves to rapid improvement under the leadership of captains Wilson Mullen and Cliff Goertemiller.
Since then, Oakwood has taken tremendous strides as a team, winning the Division III National Championships six times in a row from 2012-2017. In 2018, Oakwood became the first Ohio team to break 50,000 points, and only the 5th school outside of Texas and California to accomplish this feat. They then went on to win their eighth consecutive state championship and first Division II National Championship, and came in 2nd overall at Nationals for the first time. This performance marked the first time that a school outside of California and Texas finished top-2 at Nationals in six years. In 2019, Oakwood once again came in 2nd at Nationals and won the Division III National Championship. With a score of 52,417, this performance marked the closest a non-California school has come to beating the California state champion at Nationals since 2009. As a team, Oakwood holds the 2nd highest Division II score and highest Division III score of all time. Individuals from the school hold two of the top five places for Division II all-time, the all-time Division III record, and the record for most career 9,000+ performances by a single competitor. Perhaps most impressive is that two of the school's Scholastics (Rebecca Gentry and William Ayres) are not only top 10 in their GPA division all-time, but also broke the Nationals Scholastic record in back-to-back years (Gentry with a 9,315 in 2018, and Ayres with a 9,375 in 2019).
Coach Lori Morris has led the program to twelve consecutive overall regional titles, thirteen consecutive overall state titles, and eleven consecutive divisional national championships (DII in 2018, DIII in 2012-2017,2019,2021-2023)(nationals was not held in 2020). Oakwood's eleven divisional national championships are the most by any school in Academic Decathlon history. In addition, Morris has coached Oakwood to nine top-5 overall finishes at Nationals, including six top-3 and two 2nd-place finishes.
