Des Moines North High School is a public school in Des Moines, IA. North was founded in 1885 and has a 9-12 student enrollment of about 1100 students, placing it in the large schools division of Iowa and medium schools at the national level.
Mark Schmidt and Archie Cook are the head coaches of North's Academic Decathlon program, which has been competing since 1995.
Since 2004, when Mark Schmidt joined Archie Cook in coaching, the team has advanced to the state competition every year. In 2012, the team broke its record for highest score, attaining 35,051 at the state competition, putting it in 5th place. Although this score was the highest that North had ever achieved, the ranking this year was lower than the previous year, 2011.
