John Foster Dulles High School
Dulles High School is a school in Fort Bend ISD which is southwest of Houston. Located in Sugar Land, Texas, Dulles won a state championship in 1987 under the coaching of Judy Matney and placed second at nationals that year. They placed in the top 10 at least ten times (1987, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2015-2022), and qualified for the state competition every year between 1987 and 1996, as well as in 2002, 2003, and 2004.
They did not return to the state competition again until 2015, when they placed 10th at the large state competition with a team of 7 juniors (just a year after barely making it into the top 100 in the state). Seniors Ahsen Siddiqui (S) and Marium Haq (V) were joined by Bryan Bell, Justin Bui, and Archibald Cruz in honors; Allison Yelvington and Daniel Ho in Scholastic; and Jason Yang and Allen Wang in varsity.
In 2016, 4 of those juniors (Bryan, Allison, Justin, and Archibald) returned and were joined by senior Christian Onuogu and junior Hari Sainath in honors; junior Ethan Tu in Scholastic; and juniors Arman Nazerian and James Kesler in varsity. They continued their rise by winning region VII and finishing 5th at the large school state competition with the highest score in Fort Bend ISD history and in Region VII history (started 2002). Bryan would finish 2nd in the state in the honors category, while Allison would take home 3rd in the scholastic category.
In 2017, two returners (James and Ethan) were joined by five other scholastics (Seniors Kaidy Li and William Huynh, and Samuel Steinman-Friedman as honors; seniors Madison Gabino and Jared Roth in Scholastic) and two varsities (senior Alex Huffman and junior Leighton Nylander in varsity). The team would place second at the Region VII meet behind James E. Taylor, and were also second in the state in the large school category coming out of regionals. The team would then go on to win the large school state championship by over 900 points, scoring 49,717, once again breaking the Fort Bend ISD and Region VII record. Madison Gabino took first place in the scholastic category, beginning a run of consecutive first place scholastics that has lasted until 2024. Ethan Tu would place 2nd in the scholastic category, Jared Roth would place fifth, and Leighton Nylander would take 3rd in the varsity category. Arman Nazerian, an alternate for the team, qualified for individual nationals and claimed a 3rd place award in music. The team would then go on to compete at E-Nationals and place 2nd overall behind El Camino Real, with Sam taking 3rd place in the honors category.
In 2018, two returners (Sam and Leighton), four other seniors (Jeffrey Zhang in honors, Moeez Tariq and Vani Vellore in Scholastics, and Tejas Tuppera in varsity), and three juniors (Sophie Yangyi and Matthew Gabino in honors and Logan House in varsity) placed first at the Region VII meet, winning by over 2,500 points over James E. Taylor and Seven Lakes, despite their 2nd varsity missing out due to eligibility. At state, Dulles increased over 2,000 points but lost out to Lubbock in 91.8 points. Sam would take home first place in the scholastics and Moeez would place 5th, while Leighton would finish 2nd in the varsity category.
Dulles would appeal the results of the scores based on essay grading and subjective scoring differences at the medium and large school meets, but the appeal was denied. That summer, coaches from around the state and state director of Texas would agree on a new format for the state championship, where the top teams - regardless of size - would all compete at the same location to ensure that subjective scores were normalized across the teams competing for a title.
In 2019, two returners (Sophie and Logan), five other seniors (Scholastics Simon-Sanchez Paiva, Olivia Jackson, and Ethan Sollenberger and varsities Davis Varghese and Ali Abi Nassif) and two juniors (honors Robert Yang and Lana Haffar) placed first at the Region VII meet, winning by nearly 6,000 points, claiming 8 of the top 9 overall spots. At state, the team would go on to have two honors and two scholastics score over 9,000, winning state by over 2,500 points, and breaking the Texas State record for highest-scoring team with a score of 53,202.2. They are the first Texas team to score over 53,000. They would place the 1st and 3rd overall scholastics (Simon and Olivia), and the 1st and 2nd overall varsities (Logan and Ali). The team would then go on to compete at nationals where they received the Rookie of the Year award and would place 2nd overall in division 1. Simon and Davis each placed 3rd overall in their division.
In 2020, two returnees (Lana and Robert), three other seniors (scholastic Johan John and varsities Victoria Brewer and Mi Mach), and four juniors (honors Kathryn Phung, scholastics Jeffrey Jiang and Rishi Diltz, and varsity Chinaza Chinagozim) placed first at the Region VII meet by over 3,000 points, placing 7 of the top 9 overall spots. At state, the team would go on to have two honors (Robert - 2nd and Kathryn - 4th, three scholastics (Jeffrey, Rishi, and Johan were 1,2,3), and one varsity (Victoria - 5th) place in the top 5 overall, including the top 3 scholastics. The team would place top overall in the Large School category by almost 2,000 points, but would lose to Medium representative Highland Park for the ability to represent the state.
In 2021, three returnees (Kathryn, Jeffrey, and Rishi), four other seniors (Saloni Modi and Ashith Regi in honors, Anthony Pasala in scholastic, and Leah Melendez in varsity), and two juniors (Kevin Duong and Conrad Leung in varsity) placed first at the Region VII meet, placing 6 of the top 9 overall spots and winning by over 6,000 points. At state, the team would have three honors and two scholastics place overall, including the top three honors overall. The team would place top overall in the Large School Category by about 2,500 points, but would lose to both Highland Park and Friendswood from the Medium division. This all occurred while the team never met physically in person except for meets. All seven seniors would go on to compete at individual nationals and would receive 6 overall top-three finishes, including first overall (Kathryn Phung), third honors (Ashith Regi), all three scholastics (Abigail Diltz, Anthony Pasala, Jeffrey Jiang) and second place varsity (Leah Melendez).
In 2022, one returner (Kevin), two other seniors (Hemant Kanwar in honors and Huda Hashmi in scholastic), and six juniors (Jasmine Chou and Kyler Mitra in honors; Nora Gabriel and Ashley Dao in scholastic; and Vienna Cheng and Andrew Huynh in varsity) placed first at the Region VII meet, placing 6 of the top 9 overall spots and winning by over 4,000 points. At state, the team would go on to increase by over 3,000 points, place all 3 honors (Jasmine, Hemant, and Kyler received 2nd, 4th, and 5th), all 3 scholastics (Huda, Ashley, and Nora received 1st, 2nd, and 4th), and 2 varsities (Andrew and Kevin placed 1st and 2nd) in the top five, and win large school state by almost 4,000 points and defeat Highland Park for the right to represent Texas at nationals for the third time in their history. Nationals was online after originally slated to be in Pittsburgh, and Dulles would go on to place 2nd in the nation to Granada Hills Charter.
In 2023, five seniors returned (Jasmine, Kyler, Nora, Ashley, and Vienna) and were joined by two seniors (varsities Athulya Nair and Emily Christman) and two juniors (Honor Anant Asthana and Scholastic Audrey Hanan) to place first in the Region VII meet, taking the top 3 spots in both honors and scholastics, as well as 1st place overall varsity, and winning by over 5,000 points. At the state competition, the team took home first in large school and first overall, with Jasmine Chou and Nora Gabriel claiming first place overall in their respective categories, and Anant Asthana (2nd honors), Vienna Cheng (2nd varsity), Ashley Dao (4th scholastic), and Audrey Hanan (5th scholastic) all placing in the top 5 of their respective categories.
In 2024, two seniors (Audrey Hanan and Anant Asthana) returned and were joined by three seniors (Jason Wu in honors, Koushik Chaliki in scholastic, and Ella Sheridan in varsity), three juniors (Alex He in scholastic, and Justin Jiang and Sreela Gutha in varsity) and one sophomore (Sriram Susarla in honors) to take first place in the Region VII Meet by over 5,000 points. The team took home 1st and 2nd in honors and the top three spots in the scholastic and varsity categories. At the state meet, Dulles took home first place in a close contest and advanced to nationals for the third year in a row. Audrey Hanan took 1st in scholastics, with Koushik Chaliki and Alex He 2nd and 3rd in the same category. Anant Asthana took home 2nd in the honors category, and Sreela Gutha finished 5th in the varsity category. At nationals, the team finished 3rd in division 1 with Anant Asthana placing 1st in the honors category and Koushik Chaliki placing third in the scholastic category.
Andrew Hartman was named Texas Large School Coach of the Year in 2019. Kelsey Halfen was named Texas Large School Coach of the Year in 2022.
The coaches are so very proud of every one of their decathletes.
