In December 2014, the Placer County Department of Education announced it was cancelling their annual Academic Decathlon county competition due to a "lack of interest". However, the Sacramento County Department of Education stepped in and began allowing the county's teams to compete in Sacramento's competitions, competing separately for awards but alongside the other teams.
Despite this, no Placer County teams attended the 2016 California State Finals.
