Seven Lakes High School is a member of Katy ISD, located in Katy, Texas. Seven Lakes opened its doors in 2005 with only 9th and 10th graders. The Spartan Decathlon team opted to compete in the AD competition in their first year. The Spartans surprised many across the AD community by finishing 2nd at Regionals, behind State power Friendswood, and finishing in the top 20 in the state among all 4A high schools in that inaugural year. The Spartans continued the strong improvement in their second year, when they finished the year ranked #6 among all 4A high schools. The third year for the Spartans was very memorable as they shocked the AD community by handing Friendwood their first head to head loss by capturing the Region V MS title. The Spartans finished off the miracle by defeating strong contenders at the state meet and became the first school in the history of TAD to take a state championship away from 15 time state champion Friendswood. The 2009 season saw the Spartans move into 5A, where they finished 3rd in their first large school competition. In 2010, just their second year in the large school division, Seven Lakes won their first state championship and went to nationals, where they finished 4th in the large school division. 2011 was another strong year for the Spartans, taking second place in large school to Dobie. This would be the last year for John Irish, the coach responsible for the program since its birth. In 2012, Bill Marzen and Duff McClain, previous assistant coaches, stepped up to fill Irish's spot along with Jonathan Frishman. In 2015, Justine Frazier took up the mantle to join Frishman, replacing Duff McClain, who left after the 2014-2015 school year. In 2018, John Mitchell joined Frishman, replacing Justine Frazier, who left after the 2017-2018 school year. Mitchell and SLHS alumnus Andy Merrick took over in the Covid-affected year of 2020-21, when Frishman left to initiate the program at newly-opened Jordan High School.
