Pearce High School of Richardson, Texas, triumphed over 37 other high school teams from across the country and Northern Ireland in an Olympic-style battle of minds at the United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) held last weekend at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. ...

Calif. University School Milwaukee in Milwaukee walked off with third place. ... The overall individual A-Level winner was Ralph Melton of J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas. B-Level honors went to John Grisgby from University School Milwaukee, in Milwaukee, and the C- level winner was Dough Farry of Bishop Kelley High School in Tulsa, Okla.

  For the first time, a blind student competed in this year's USAD.

John Miller of Omaha Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska received the Kristin Caperton Award for dedication and perseverence.

Taft students claimed gold medals in four subjects. Lillian Morris took the medal for the A students in fine arts, while Jeremy Singer and David Raikow tied for the gold for the B students. In science, Matthew Petach took the gold for A students, and Jeremy Singer took it for social studies for the B students. Raikow also took gold for the interview portion.

Raikow and Singer also claimed scholarships from the American Honda Foundation, which donated $30,000 in money to the top scoring students. Raikow , who plans to attend Oberlin College, received $3,000, and Singer, who expects to attend the University of California at Berkeley, received $2,000.

HOOSIERS WIN IN ACADEMIC DECATHLON

Two students from Bloomington South High School are among the winners in the U.S. Academic Decathlon , a 10-event battle of the brains.... Among the individual winners were the two students from Bloomington South - Robert Bosch, who tied for second place in the honors division in mathematics, and Geoff Nordloh, who was third in the honors division in science.
