Barlow, Corbett and Corbett Charter high schools scored several top honors at the Oregon Academic Decathlon, with Corbett and Barlow high schools going on to compete at the national level.

Barlow took first place in the state academic decathlon and will go on to compete at the national level, its first state championship. Corbett High took second place in the competition and qualified for the online national academic competition. Corbett Charter took a third-place finish in its first year competing in the decathlon.

The academic decathlon was held Saturday, Feb. 20, at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. Each team consists of nine members who are organized by grade point average into three divisions: honor, scholastic and varsity. Team members compete in 10 individual events in the competition.

Participants take multiple-choice exams in seven school subjects including mathematics, science, social studies, literature, art and music. Students are also judged in three subjective events: speech, interview and essay.

Barlow students won seven gold, seven silver and 11 bronze medals in individual events, winning at least one medal in each of the decathlon’s 10 events. They finalized their win by posting the highest team score in the Super Quiz, an oral exam open to the public, on this year’s decathlon theme: the French Revolution.

Barlow will represent Oregon at the national competition in April in Omaha, Neb.

Barlow’s eight-member team was led by individual decathlon silver medalist Nathanael Franks in the honors division, bronze medalist Mike Mata in the scholastic division and bronze medalist Michael Potts in the varsity division.

Other individual medalists from Barlow included Elise Lagerstrom, winner of the economics exam in the honors division; Mikayla Hooser, winner of the science exam in the scholastic division; and Kylie Rodgers, winner of the mathematics exam in the varsity division.

Other members of the Barlow championship team were Abram Dorrough and Katherine Joseph. Tai Quirke, a science teacher at the school, coaches the Barlow team.

The nine-member Corbett High School team will be eligible to compete against other schools of a similar size in the U.S. Academic Decathlon Small School Online Competition, making it the third straight year Corbett has qualified for a national competition.
