Proposed Change in Policy

The ADSIC Regionals system should be comprehensive enough to display details about each state's regional/county information but should not be wholly complete as to avoid "paralysis by analysis".

Therefore, the following policy is proposed:

  • 1. All states should have an established regionals page if only for posterity. This allows for the infrastructure to exist for when we get substantial information as well as deter people from breaking from conformity (though some states' local organization will require some minor breaks by design).
  • 2. All states should have a uniform system of classification (i.e. Division I, II, III, IV etc) as opposed to Divisions and then other use a Large School, Medium School system.
    • Alaska is a good example of conformity: They have divisions, but their numerical system is reversed from USAD (Largest is Division III, Smallest is Division I). However, the creators (largely Will Bishop) of the Alaska Regional section flipped them so they are harmonious with USAD.
  • 3. We don't need to know who won every medal. Regional Results should be limited to the final state qualifiers, followed by a region by region list of scores, and maybe the top 3 (or top 5) finishers in each category for each division in the region. If one wants to, they can establish a page for that years region and throw all the subjects and scores and whatnot into that page for completeness.
  • 4. For larger states, the District a school belongs in is quite welcome, but if it is a small state with uniquely named schools, such a column will not be necessary.
  • 5. A rank column is recommended, as most people will screw up their count somewhere down the list. Also, it makes it easier for people to research such information for creating school pages and updating lists, etc.

Feel free to use the talk page to discuss this.

Current system

The first thing to note is the table of contents, and how it has been shortened. The use of {{TOClimit|limit=3}} makes the deepest subset in the TOC go to 2, but in fact there are still deeper levels of header that you can't see on the TOC. This is to avoid a TOC bigger than Jesus on Texas and other regional pages.

We don't need to know which varsity got a bronze in Science in region 4 of small schools in Pennslyvania. All we would like to know is the top 3 of each category in each region. All the specifics, such as silvers in econ and gold in essay can go on the state page.

The ISD Column is, for the most part, useless. However, on the larger states where there are naming conflicts, such as Texas' two schools named Nimitz, then ISD is useful. Do not put it on state pages.

The "Rank" column people like to use is crap. If you can count to 15, you can calculate their rank. This is why we use sortable tables. Also, you don't need to highlight the winner or make gold silver and bronze cells.

Qualifier pages are stupid. Instead, you could put up at the header "everybody in large schools who scored over 36,502 made it to state. everybody in medium schools who scored over 32,085 made it to state" and so forth.
