Kort Jackson (born December 1, 1987) is a former Academic Decathlete on the Oliver Wendell Holmes Academic Decathlon team from 2004-2006, and a former member of DemiDec from 2004 to some point before 2010 (Kort himself doesn't know exactly when he "left"). Known for a brash, competitive persona, he was at times difficult to work with during his time as a Academic Decathlete. When the original Acadec Scores site failed in 2006, he helped to raise awareness and worked to find a new home, which led to the creation of AcaDec Scores and Information Center (ADSIC) by David Gilman (Gil) on March 15, 2007. As of 2022, he remains (understatement follows) intermittently involved with ADSIC.

The AcaDeca Years

2003-2004 Season

After arriving at Holmes during his Sophomore year, he was invited to compete for a spot on the team at the end of August 2003. After advancing past the first cut, Kort's first practice meet was the Moody Invitational in Corpus Christi in November of 2003. While he won six awards (three of which were medals), his first meet resulted in a ten subject score of 5,440, which was low and put him at risk of failing to make the team. However, in two subsequent practice rounds, his score improved to 6,430 and then to 6,815, which was sufficient to secure a spot on the final team of nine. Whilst a Varsity ("C") based on GPA, he did compete as a Scholastic ("B") for the 2004 Regional contest. However, Kort won only one individual medal and finished with a 5,755, causing the coaching team to request for and receive a change to return Kort back to varsity for the State meet. Difficult subjective results combined with several bombed tests resulted in a 5,660 overall score. Kort won no individual medals at state, and the lone bright spot was managing a 3/5 at the State Super Quiz relay (same as his score in Regionals), which allowed Holmes to claim the Region IV Super Quiz Relay title and a share of the State Super Quiz relay title.(32/45 at regionals, 36/45 tie with Plano Senior at State).

2004-2005 Season

Kort was invited back in the fall of 2004 to compete for the Holmes team again, and had a better start than his sophomore year. Once again classified by GPA as a Varsity, he got a second chance to compete as a Scholastic after the top Scholastic (David Urrabazo, Jr.) had to sit out the practice meet at King High School in December 2004 due to health reasons. Kort ranked in six awards (including three medals). However, this time, one such award was sixth overall scholastic, a drastic improvement. David's health recovered and he easily made the team (to the jubilation of everyone on the team) and Kort secured another spot on the team, this time as a Scholastic.

At the regional competition in 2005 (at the old "Grey" campus of Judson High School), Kort scored much higher with a 6,233 and picked up a Bronze in Language and Literature. He finished in sixth place among large school Scholastics at Region IV, having missed out of the fifth place medal by thirty points to Northside Taft's Alex Marsh. Holmes would easily pick up another Regional Championship, scoring 44,336 points to Taft's 38,808, advancing to state in Corpus Christi. At state, Kort's score improved to 6,515 while Holmes finished with 44,983, strong enough to win third place in the Large School category.

2005-2006 Season

2005-06 marked Kort's senior year at Holmes, and his best year awards wise. At the Northside Invitational at Clark in November 2005, Kort won 8 awards, including Second in the Scholastic Overall score category. Just weeks later at the King Meet, Kort picked up 6 awards, including fourth overall in the Scholastic category. Score wise, Kort easily made the team, but his penchant for brash behavior almost cost him that spot.

At the Regional competition (this time hosted by Clark High School), Kort notched a 6,343 and earned three subject medals and a fourth overall medal finish in the large school scholastic category. Short of a last second upset by Clark for Super Quiz relay, Holmes still won Overall SuperQuiz and stunned the host team with a final regional score of 44,392, with Clark taking silver with just 37,966. By winning yet another Regional Championship, a automatic bid to state was secured.

At state in Aldine, TX in 2006, Holmes had its best shot to win a state title yet after a twelve year drought. However, subjectives again would haunt the team, and Kort's overall score reflected it. Despite a considerable improvement in objectives (including ranking 6th in Music and 10th in Science and even a top fifty spot amongst all ~120 Scholastic competitors, Kort recorded just 6,417 points, short of his goal of 7,000. Holmes still managed to retain second place among Large Schools, it's best finish since 1994, and Holmes even won second place overall in SuperQuiz. However, during the Super Quiz Relay, Kort earned only a 1/5 score, leading to a outburst of frustration involving uttering profanities (see below).

2006 Large School SQ Controversy

By Kort's [own confession] he was responsible for a small commotion involving profanity (involving the "f" word) after learning of his Super Quiz Relay score. Kort later [apologized] for his actions, and no repercussions from Texas Academic Decathlon have followed his actions.

Post AcaDeca career

After graduating from Holmes in 2006, Kort applied for and was admitted to The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), earning a Bachelor of Arts in History (with minor in Economics) in May 2012, a Master of Arts in Political Science in May 2015 and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) (within the Higher Education Administration concentration) in May 2017. In the Fall of 2019, he was admitted to UTSA for a PhD program in ELPS, and is approaching his dissertation.

Professionally, Kort was hired as an adjunct instructor at Northwest Vista College teaching Government starting in 2015. In Fall 2017, he also taught a government class at Joint Base San Antonio through St. Philip's College. In 2020, Kort was assigned Full-Time Temporary status (allowing him to teach more classes per semester) until Fall 2022, when he was hired to be on the full-time faculty on a permanent basis, to be renewed annually.

As for involvement in the AcaDeca sphere, Kort has made a few visits to his alma mater, most recently in 2015 participating in a alumni vs. AD team scrimmage at Holmes.

Personally, Kort has calmed down a lot since his AcaDeca days.

ADSIC

In October 2006, Kort took command of AcaDec scores, and helped to found ADSIC alongside David Gilman on March 15, 2007. The first year proved difficult thanks to Kort's overthinking about the issues of ADSIC. Despite difficulties, ADSIC found unity and strength thanks to the efforts of Gilman, Adam Cornish, and several newcomers (Blooooo, Andrew Hartman, and Jon Angel). After much consideration, Kort rededicated his focus and took steps to fix the mess he caused. Since then, ADSIC has since grown to be an indispensable tool today. In 2008, a new logo was revealed (the seal you see on the top left hand corner) and the front page design designed by Adam Cornish was adopted (and later refined). Starting around 2010 however, Kort's involvement at ADSIC is rather quiet, but occasionally he has returned to try new code or to humble his biography just a bit.
