John Green[edit]

Okay, so John Green didn't actually medal in Speech, but maybe he was in the Speech Showcase?? I had the same fate where your impromptu score sinks you and all other showcasers actually medal. : - ) I'm leaving that speculative note here to mirror other Nationals pages where, for now, the only records of Speech Showcasers are on the Talk page. There was a little handwritten note of what appears to be speech showcases, which were as follows:

Varsity:
2: Indiana - Story of Jelk
3: Mississippi - Driving at age 15
3: Minnesota - Generation gap - stories at christmas
1: Texas - Teenager as victim of stereotyping

Scholastic:
2: California - Prejudice
3: N.J. Old Tappan - Mother with cancer
3: Rhode Island - China policy
1: California - pledge of allegiance - spirit of America

Honor:
1: Minnesota - Slenderness image
3: California - Civil disobedience
2: Maine - Procrastination
3: California - Costa Rica - problems of tourism

That said, this list was unlabeled, and the first numbers don't seem to match up with the actual medals, so I'm not entirely sure! TinDefacto (talk) 07:21, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

Ah! You're probably right. And Speech Showcase rank should have no effect on Speech medals. FWIW, in at least the 2009 Nationals format, this would have been theoretically possible:
The IN, MS, MN, and TX varsities listed above scored 695, 690, 690, and 640, respectively, on the 700-point prepared portion before they got selected for Speech Showcase.
The IL and GA varsities who got Gold and Silver out of 1,000 in the main speech event scored 685/700 and 670/700 and got perfect impromptu scores of 300/300 but the Showcase selection skipped them because their topics were too similar to the 695 and 690 speeches.
The second (public) performances of the speeches propelled the TX varsity ahead to win the "first place in Speech Showcase trophy" as awarded by the (ceremonial) Speech Showcase judges. Then the IN varsity got the second-place trophy and the MN and MS tied for the third-place trophy, which is probably what the first numbers mean. But that is a purely ceremonial performance, everybody's prepared speech scores stay in place, and impromptu scores of ~200/300 caused the higher-scoring prepared speech performers to miss out on medals for the main Speech event that is out of 1,000 points.
