Music
The subject of American music is complex and multifaceted. From the colonial period through the present, American composers, performers, and musical instrument makers have found inspiration in from Europe, Native Americans, Africa, and even Asia. The fact that some forms, blues and jazz in particular, have had their birth and development in the United States, but draw from musical materials taken from two separate continents - Africa and Europe - adds to this complex mix. In looking at American music from the colonial period on though[sic] to the early twentieth century, some key themes emerge, namely a pioneer spirit, diversity, and patriotism. While these three themes might not be applicable to every piece of American music composed throughout American history, a study of musical examples that do exhibit these characteristics can lead us through virtually every major style of music in America and the music of most of the great American composers of the past. |
