Talk:Pearland High School

From AcaDec Scores and Information Center
Jump to navigationJump to search

First, you do not write a wiki article like it is your personal diary. I have fixed many of the tense and comma splice issues. Second, if you wish to discuss individual accomplishments, create pages referencing SPECIFIC teams, feel free to go all out on those pages, but the article is about the pearland academic decathalon team, that means every individual team from 1987 to the present. I have removed all information not relevant to the article in question. Third, do not reference people by their first names. Go read some of the articles about the team written by the journalists (google it) and tell me how often they refer to "veronica", "robert" or "scott". Pearlandisbad 21:06, 23 March 2008 (PDT)

wow dude, sorry you don't like it, but you don't have to go on and delete everything like that, you could just tell me or something. who the hell is this anyways? And I never planned on being in journalism. Stanley Tree 21:12, 23 March 2008 (PDT)

  • Wow. The whole feel of the article has changed. I don't believe, however, that the article warranted so drastic a change or that Pearlandisbad should personally insult members. If he or she believes that another editor needed advice, a more kind way to so state would be much appreciated. If Pearlandisbad continues to insult members, editors, or teams (or rudely deletes whole sections of articles without discussion), bans or other measures may be enacted. A similar version of this statement has been posted on the user's talk page.---Collegebookworm
    • Well first let me clarify by stating that I in no way wish to insult a team that I was on, nor the coaches who are some of my favorite people. But I saw a major issue and fixed it and the discussion page is where I rage on the person responsible. And the drastic change was necesarry, it was written like a blog, contained information irellevant to the topic, and had gramatical errors all over the place (I doubt that Ive removed them all, I tried to keep some of the original wording) so I did what was needed to clean up the article. I probably went over the line with one particular statement and now Ive removed it, but I would point to this fine peice of wording right below us ("Please note that all contributions to AcaDec Scores and Information Center may be edited, altered, or removed by other contributors. If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly, then don't submit it here.") as a guideline for what happens when you do it wrong. As for giving the editor advice, I find the saying "if you want something done right, do it yourself" to pretty much cover all the bases on this one, he is free to add in information that is relevant as he likes but I felt that leaving it up to the person who decided the original article was acceptable would be far too time consuming. I will create a page for the 2007-2008 team and link to it in a see also section, where the author of the original article can talk about the intricacies of a fine year, but again, that information did not belong, so it was removed. There was redundency in the coaches section, so it was removed. There were many, many cases where it was simply a narration of this last season, so they were removed. oh, and I wouldnt use the name pearlandisbad unless I went to pearland and experienced it first hand.

  • First off, I apologize for my harsh reply, I was just pretty pissed off. The thing that bothers me is that this has been here for quite a few months, and no one has seemed to have a problem with it. Now, if this information was wrong, I would definitely like you to change it; however, the information is correct, and I don't think it should have been changed. And I believe the 2007-2008 Pearland Academic Decathlon team would be part of the history of Pearland Academic Decathlon. If I had information from previous teams, then I would have used nearly the same type of writing. I apologize if you think my writing style is "bloggish" (I believe Jon did say something about my writing style, although it wasn't bad), I just tried to present the info as well as I though possible. All the information is relavant to the history, but I will rewrite it in a more...didactic style.

Can I take a stab at who this is? What year were you? Unless it's Wolfram...Stanley Tree 08:44, 24 March 2008 (PDT)

    • I just saw it yesterday, tbh I happened on the page by chance. Anyway, articles arent always about right/wrong, they HAVE to be written in encylcopedia fashion, so I suggest you go grab the nearest encylcopedia and check out how they do it. For one, youll be suprised at just how little information (relative to all thats out there) is actually in the article, but youll notice that whats there is highly relevant, quantifiable and more importantly is the entire article. The problem with the style of the first article is that it was written like a timeline of the events of a season, again, I have created a new page just for that, simply go into the history, copy the information you wish to add to that, and do it there, because that is the place to do it. There is lots of information you can get from asking layne about previous teams, so maybe if this is something you do often enough you will create a page for all the previous teams. But you need to limit the information to the events and not peoples' attitudes. For instance, you dont need to talk about how the team felt going into the objectives, you only need to talk about specific instances like that if something actually happened, so if someone is going into the room and breaks their leg and cant compete, by all means add that in. My suggestion for the team pages is to make a table that lists the student's name, regional total score and state total score, then to have a section that lists who got what medals, and then to have a section for SIGNIFIGANT events (new coaches is a signifigant event, a student being dismissed from the team due to grade miscalculation, these are good things to include in team pages, practice meet scores are probably not). Ill leave that up to you. And you want to take a shot at who this is? If you had asked me nicely I actually would have just told you, I just didnt like "who the hell is this anyways?" very much. However, I never turn down a chance to play a game, so here are your 3 hints: Im a new england patriots fan, the unexpected always seems to happen around me, and there were 3 different principals during my high scool.
  • Again, I apologize for how I acted, and you're right, alot of that stuff doesn't need to be in there, like said "feelings" going into state. However, most of the scores should be kept on the school team page, especially the all-time top scores. I will omit any extraneous info, but I don't think there is a need for a seperate page. I will use Collegebookworm's example for a encyclopedia approach in his for Flower Mound High School bio (which itself needs to be edited for style and content, as I've been studying for UIL and haven't had time to update with info gained from coaches past and present---Collegebookworm).

Sorry again, the last thing I would want to do is insult a former decathlete from our school. I would guess Yuhong, with the Pats remark

  • If you feel like adding scores, I would highly suggest doing it in the team page, because it deals with specific teams. Anyway, you took that boston hint a little too literally, go ask layne if hes had any students who were from new england and you should get your answer.
