Proposed Procedure of Regional Results for Texas Academic Decathlon Regional Competitions 2009

Introduction and advancement criteria

The Texas Academic Decathlon has twelve regions, almost all who has at least two divisions competing at the same meet but are competing only against their division.

Overall, eighty teams shall advance to the 2009 State Competition. This is approximately 1/3 of all schools competing in Texas.

However, each division sends a different amount of schools, and have different qualifications.

Here are the advancement criteria for each division:

Large Schools

All schools who are in the Conference 5A (or correlate in population) compete in this divison.

There are 11 Regions who serve Large Schools. Forty Large Schools will advance to the State Competition.

Each School that obtains the highest score in its region shall be declared the Region Champion and shall advance to state automatically, regardless of their score.

If two or more schools shall tie for the highest amount of points in their region, all the tied schools shall be declared Region Champions regardless of score and thus advance to State. The last case of a Regional Championship tie was 2004, where Meqsuite North and McKinney High Schools deadlocked at 35,302.

The remaining state berths are filled by the highest scoring teams for the division regardless of their location at Regionals. Usually, 29 schools will advance in this format. If there are multiple Region champions in a region, the number of At-Large seats will decrease to accomodate the multiple champions.

The only exception to the 40 school rule is if the Host school of the State Competition fails to advance by either winning their region or winning an At-Large berth. In this case, the Host school shall become the 41st qualifying school. The last case of a 41st school was Nimitz High School of Aldine ISD (not to be confused with Nimitz High School of Irving ISD) who failed to secure a championship or At-Large Bid.

Medium Schools

All schools who are in the Conference 4A (or correlate in population) compete in this divison.

There are 9 Regions who serve Medium Schools. Twenty-Five Medium Schools will advance to the State Competition.

Each School that obtains the highest score in its region shall be declared the Region Champion. The 9 schools who win their respective regions shall automatically advance to the state competition regardless of what their scores are.

If two or more schools shall tie for the highest amount of points in their region, all the tied schools shall be declared Region Champions regardless of score and thus advance to State. There has been no recorded case of two Medium Schools acheiving this feat.

The remaining state berths are filled by the highest scoring teams for the division regardless of their location at Regionals. Usually, 16 schools will advance in this format. If there are multiple Region champions in a region, the number of At-Large seats will decrease to accomodate the multiple champions.

While the Host School provision exists for Medium Schools (like the Large Schools), it has not applied to this division due to the host site being a college.

Small Schools

All schools who are in either the Conference A, 2A or 3A (or correlate in population) compete in this divison.

There are 3 Regions who serve Small Schools. Fifteen Small Schools will advance to the State Competition.

Each School that obtains the highest score in its region shall be declared the Region Champion. The 3 schools who win their respective regions shall automatically advance to the state competition regardless of what their scores are.

Usually, 12 schools will advance in this format. If there are multiple Region champions in a region, the number of At-Large seats will decrease to accomodate the multiple champions.

While the Host School provision exists for Small Schools (like the Small Schools), it has not applied to this division due to the host site being a college and due to the Small Schools competing alongside the Medium Schools.

ADSIC Key for determining Qualifying Schools

The following Key shall be used to color code results:

Key

Key
Indicates a team that has automatically qualified for state by winning Region.
Indicates a team has advanced to state via their score (At-Large)
Indicates that a team is projected by ADSIC to advance to state, but has not been confirmed by a reliable source.
Indicates a team has been eliminated from state qualification contention.

How does ADSIC project advancing schools?

Over the night of January 31, 2009, results will come in. ADSIC will not announce any school's elimination from state qualification contention until the minimum number of schools have reported in (40 for Large, 25 for Medium and 15 for Small).

As scores come in, ADSIC will set projected thresholds. Such thresholds may be raised or lowered as scores come in. After a threshold is established, any school who is above the threshold may be considered a projected state qualifying team. As a rule of thumb, thresholds start high and are lowered as time passes and the picture becomes clearer.

If ADSIC recieves information from a trusted source that a school is confirmed as a qualifier, they will be marked as such.
