Team History
Granada Hills Charter came to prominence in Academic Decathlon in the 2003-2004 competition season, a year after becoming a charter school. In 2004, GHCHS placed fifth in LAUSD with 45,636.8 points and advanced to the California state competition, where they placed 4th with 47,844 points. In 2005, Granada Hills once again placed fifth in LAUSD, scoring 46,293.6 points, but then made a remarkable improvement, placing 3rd at state with 48,194.5 points and coming within 900 points of clinching a state championship. The 2006 Granada Hills team placed third at LAUSD with 47,311.6 points, behind superpowers El Camino Real and Taft. However, they declined to 45,681.8 at the California state competition and placed fifth overall.
The 2007 Granada Hills Charter team became one of the greatest teams in the history of the California Academic Decathlon. Led by coach Nicholas Weber, this squad of eight females and one male scored 49,775 points to win the LAUSD city title. Granada Hills entered the state competition with the highest regional score in the nation. At state, Granada Hills and North Hollywood tied for third in the Super Quiz oral relay with 58 points, just behind El Camino Real's 59 points and Moorpark's 60 points. The individual overall results hinted that Granada Hills might win its first state title: Granada Hills was the only Division 1 team on which three individuals received overall medals; El Camino, Moorpark, and North Hollywood only received one individual medal each. Granada Hills varsity Dustin McKenzie placed third with 8,235 points, scholastic Eunice Lee third with 8,544 points, and honors Allison Quach third with 8,620 points. However, El Camino Real improved their score from regionals by a shocking 1,600 points and wrested the state tile away from Granada Hills. El Camino Real scored 50,486.4, just 210 points above Granada Hills' 50,276.3.
In 2008, Granada Hills Charter placed 6th at regionals and state with 46,165 and 48,914 points, respectively. The 2009 team posted a score of 45,762.9 to take fifth place at the LAUSD regionals, but only placed 11th at state with 45,599.4 points.
Granada's incredibly well-rounded 2010 team placed third in California with the third highest score in the nation. This momentum continued in 2011 and soared in 2012 with Granada Hills Charter winning LAUSD, California State, and Nationals both years, shattering many Academic Decathlon records in the process. Granada again captured the regional, state, and national titles in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019.
Granada Hills Charter again captured the state title in 2021 by scoring a total of 54,021.1 points.
