Effective starting in the 2008-2009 competition season, California Academic Decathlon adopted a new state championship format. Teams are now placed in divisions based on their regional score instead of school enrollment. Among the 60 advancing schools (including region champions and invited teams), the highest scoring 20 teams compete in Division I at state. The next 20 and final 20 teams compete in Divisions II and III, respectively. See "2009 CAD Championship Format" for the reasoning behind this change.
