After outscoring Clements High School at district competition, Dulles High School lost regional competition to Clements, but finally overcame their rival to win by 25 points, which remains the smallest margin of victory in the history of the Texas Academic Decathlon state finals.

The top student in each GPA category won a $4,000 scholarship. In addition, each member of the state champion Dulles team garnered $4,000 scholarships, Clements' runner-up decathletes each received $2,000 scholarships, and third place J. J. Pearce team members each earned $1,000.
